Every year, 100 gorgeous contestants come to Pattaya, Thailand to take part in the world’s most popular transgender pageant – Miss Tiffany Universe.
The contest was founded in 1998 with a hope to improve the quality of life for transgender community in Thailand. At first, the most part of ladyboys who participated in this beauty competition were in the entertainment industry or in the sex business and some of them had big struggles in their life. But now, after 18 years, girls come from various professional backgrounds, mostly university students, doctors, engineers, pharmacists, etc. Chosen contestants are judged by their physical attributes and general performance according to the feminine ideal.
This year pageant started in March and will finish on May 8, the final part will take place in Pattaya Beach, 60 miles south-west of Bangkok. Only 30 lucky beauties will be able to participate in final catwalk in ball gowns and swimsuits. And here there is something to fight for because the winning awards are quite impressive! The winners of beauty contest will get cash prizes (3.300 USD to Miss Tiffany's Universe), jewelries, crowns and other trophies from sponsoring companies. Besides main titleholders there are other special awards including Miss Photogenic, Miss Sexy Star, Miss Congeniality and Miss Popular Vote which will be given to few other chosen contestants. All of them will be also presented with cash and other gifts from sponsoring companies.
There is also other special thing making this beauty pageant outstanding among others: the organizers choose contestants deliberately paying attention on the elegance of the make up. They want girls looking natural like a real lady.
Every year, about 100 ladyboys from Thailand and other places around the world apply to take part in the pageant. The requirements to candidates are quite simple: all of them need to have Thai nationality, to be transgender and to be between the age of 18 and 25. The applicants aged under 20 need also parental permission to enter and here can be some problems because not every parent would agree to recognize their child's new identity. Usually more than half are not supportive that's why this year contest organizers are trying to do more like training to improve understanding between parents and their transgender children.
The Miss Tiffany's Universe contest receives more attention since it is broadcast live on National Thai television with approximately 15 million viewers. Using pageant Thailand improves Pattaya's image abroad attracting lots of tourists to this resort city.
Set up with a goal to promote the rights and equality for transgender community Tiffany's Show gives a big advance for the winners – most of them become very successful in their life. Treechada Petcharat, who won the title in 2004, became popular actress in Hong Kong and this year also was named one of the most beautiful faces in the world.
